recreational research - the shortwave tapes (1984)

in the dark nights of the winter of 1984, when the cold war was still fairly chilly, the family had moved house; lonely, i spent many an intriguing hour in my bedroom listening to, and recording, the bizarre and mysterious rhythmic bleepings and squelchings that the were bouncing off the atmosphere onto my trusty sharp gf-666 boombox. whilst listening to a podcast of click on the other day i heard about eric skiff who is collecting the strangely evocative recordings of early 90's modems. the presenter mentioned he was looking for a recording of weather balloons and this rung a bell. so into the attic to dig out my cassette tape collection and hey presto! sounds as strange now as it did then. so here for your audio archeological pleasure and wonderment are the best of the recreational research shortwave tapes...
